Department of Internal Medicine History 

The Department of Internal Medicine has been committed to excellence in teaching, research and patient care since its founding by Maxwell M. Wintrobe, M.D., in 1943 and is the single largest department within the University of Utah.  This diverse department consists of 203 faculty members, 2 Distinguished Professors, 81 professors, 37 associate professors, 61 assistant professors and 22 instructors; encompassing over 800 total employees.  In addition to the University Hospital, faculty in the Department are based at the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Intermountain Healthcare LDS Hospital

 

 

Clinical Activities

The clinical enterprise is focused at University Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute and distinct clinics located on campus at Research Park or at the University of Utah Community Clinics

Internal Medicine Hospitalists serve as attending physicians for inpatient wards.  Internal Medicine faculty also serve as attending faculty at the VA Salt Lake City Medical Center, supervising residents on four separate teams as well as partnering with the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System to conduct subspecialty clinics and services at the VA Salt Lake City Medical Center and Intermountain Healthcare LDS Hospital. 

 

The Dialysis program consists of 11 off-campus sites throughout Utah and Southern Idaho and provides dialysis treatment for approximately 655 patients with end-stage renal disease.  Subspecialty outreach clinics are ducted in Wyoming, Nevada, Idaho, and southern Utah

 

 

Our Education Mission 


The Department of Internal Medicine places the utmost importance on educating its students and takes most seriously its charge to train the region’s future internists and medicine subspecialists.  The teaching efforts within the Department are nationally recognized for a unique blend of consistency and innovation.  The Internal Medicine Residency Program is vigorous and well respected with a total of 109 residents enrolled; 88 in the 3-year categorical curriculum and 21 in the 1-year preliminary curriculum. 

Training is conducted at the University Hospital, the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System, and IHC LDS Hospital.  As a group, graduates from the Internal Medicine Residency Program score in the upper 10% on the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Exam.  The Department maintains a full-range of subspecialty fellowship training programs in clinical disciplines with over 50 fellows in the Department at any given time.

 

Internal Medicine’s weekly Grand Rounds brings nationally renowned clinicians and researchers to the campus to present on cutting-edge innovations in medicine.   

This forum serves as an opportunity for community physicians to come to the medical center and learn from the nation’s leaders in selected areas of medicine.  Additionally, Internal Medicine has twelve funded lectureships to lecture and spend time mentoring residents, fellows and junior faculty.

Research Programs

 

Research efforts within the Department are strong and expanding.  As the largest research group at the University of Utah, the Department’s faculty serve as principal investigators on 96 HIH and government awarded grants and contracts.  The Department is on the forefront in many research areas with high local, national and internal impact.  Core areas of research excellence within the Department funded by multidisciplinary program grants from the HIH include:
  •  Prostate, lung, colorectal and ovarian cancer screening
  • Study of the efficacy of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in knee osteoarthritis
  • Pathobiochemistry of acute lung injury
  • Genetics and consequence of nicotine addiction
  • Center of Excellence in Molecular Hematology
  • Animal modeling in diabetes research
  • Hexosamine glucose toxicity in the injury caused by diabetes
  • Rural program in antimicrobials in the intermountain region
  • Nitric oxide and severe malaria
  • Oxidation risk factors
